In the last year, I have opened up many, (probably?) too many credit credits.  I usually only open up a new card when the rewards scheme is significantly better or when the sign up bonus is too tough to pass up.

Whenever I sign up for a new card I make sure to set up automatic payments so that I never get a late fee.

I got pretty lucky a few months back and I was able to get a $400 sign up bonus for the Bank of America Cash Rewards cards (expired - sorry) even though I already had the same exact card.

Unfortunately, I thought I had signed up for automatic payments, but I forgot!

I also always get statements sent in the mail, otherwise I won't look at them.  When I saw my statement for this card I had a $25 late fee!  I hate late fees.  You lose extra money and it hurts your credit.

It's important to know that these fees can almost always be reversed if you catch them in time.  

I called last night to pay the $500 bill (why would I spend more than necessary to the get the bonus).  Once that bill is posted, I confirmed that I can call up again and have the fee reversed.  This has happened a handful of times to me and I have always been able to get the fee reversed.  You can usually even do it via email from inside your account.

Some companies will even allow fees to be reversed months and years later if it only happened once.  Just call and find out.

Update 2:  Today is the last day to use your cards so buy whatever you want at this point.    You need to have registered your cards previously.  Sign up period is over.  There is very little of value online that you can buy, but according to comment 114 on dansdeals, 800eichlers.com works!  You can buy gift cards at $20 increments and then combine them into one larger purchase. Unfortunately, you have to pick it up at the store or it is $10 shipping each.  If anyone is going, can you pick up my 4 gift cards ;)

Keep in mind that in many promotions, AMEX will email you immediately.  It is not true for this one.  I got an email almost 36 hours later.  

Update: I have now registered all 4 of my American express cards for all 5 cities (or $400 free).  Unfortunately, I was not able to register any authorized users.  Hopefully, we can find a site that sells $25 amazon gift cards or $25 visa gift cards and really get free money!

American Express is at it again! You can get $20 credits for spending $20 or more (i.e. - free money) in a number of locations.  

This will work when the site has an online site that processes its transactions through the correct zip code, but wait until a site is verified, unless you want to take a risk.  

You can register now, but you need to spend the money from 9/29-10/07

Also, Small Business Saturday is coming up on November 24th.  American Express hasn't announced what they will do this year, but last year they gave a $25 credit for spending $25 at any small business anywhere on that day.

You can buy gift cards to any store you want (including local grocery and gas stations) and use them throughout the year.
