JetBlue - TrueBlue Points No Longer Expire

JetBlue is my favorite airline to fly domestically.

They tend to be cheaper than the bigger airlines like United and American Airlines and they give you more amenities in coach and better customer service.  Everyone gets a free checked bag, a snack and drink and Direct TV for free (which is priceless when you are flying with a kid).

In addition, if your Direct TV is not working you automatically get a $15 credit towards your next flight, no matter how much the ticket actually costs.  In addition, if there is ever a major delay you can get an even larger credit.

JetBlue also has a great Frequent Flyer program with TrueBlue.  Every seat is available with points and their points are consistently worth more than 1 cent per mile.


The problems with JetBlue have been that they aren't part of any airline alliance.  This means that you can only use the points to fly on JetBlue.  JetBlue also only flies domestically   TrueBlue points also expired with a year of inactivity which meant that you needed to fly every year to keep your points.  Not Anymore!


JetBlue has decided today that your points will never expire!

This is perfect timing for me since I no longer need to fly into New York and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to use my built up miles.

WSJ: Best Airline Miles Availability

The WSJ published a survey of airlines and tried to figure out which airline had the most availability to book flights with their miles.

Not surprisingly, Southwest Airlines, Jetblue and United all came very close to the top and US Airways and Delta all the way at the bottom.  This should affect the way you try to accumulate miles.  What's the point of miles if you can't use them.

JetBlue 4X Rewards

I'm a little late to the game here, but if you already booked a JetBlue flight for travel between 4-8 and 6-19, you will get 4x the normal rewards for that flight if you sign up for this promotion or click on the picture.

They claim you get 15 points per dollar, but 15 isn't divisible by 4 so I'm not sure how that works.

Another Reason to Love JetBlue - Know Your Bill of Rights

Whenever I fly domestically, I consistently fly JetBlue when they fly that route.  Besides for often being the cheapest, especially when they are running one of their frequent sales, they also have great customer service.

Know what you are Entitled to

It's important to know what you are entitled to when you are flying and something goes wrong because sometimes you only get it when you ask.

For example, on Continental, alav hashalom, and still on United, I knew that if the flight was delayed for a while (I think it was 2 or 4 hours, not sure anymore) you are entitled to a $10 voucher and I once got two $10 vouchers for me and a friend when no one else got one simply because I knew to ask.

On JetBlue, it is also important to know what you are entitled to, but they make it easier to you to find out.  I have gotten $15 a passenger for a broken DirectTV for part of a flight and I usually hope for short flights that the TV is broken :)

My Wife's Trip Last Night - Free $75 Credit

My wife flew last night on JetBlue and unfortunately her trip was delayed by 3 hours because of a mechanical issue with the plane that had been scheduled to arrive.  

I looked up the Bill of Rights and saw that she was entitled to a $75 credit for a 3 hour delay that is based on a controllable irregularity.  

I sent an email to customer service explaining the situation and within an hour JetBlue sent out an email saying that everyone on the flight was going to get a $75 credit for their inconvenience.  

I am not naive enough to think I got a credit for everyone, but JetBlue did not have to send out the message to everyone, they could have waited for complaints.  Even though everyone got the credit this time, it's still important to know what you are entitled to.!

Last night, my family was flying from JFK to Buffalo on JetBlue with our two year old son.   We choose JetBlue because their prices are very competitive with the competition, often cheaper, and they have an incredible in flight entertainment system for even short-haul domestic flights.  When you are travelling with a two year old, that can make a big difference.

Last night, the DirecTV stopped working right after takeoff and never came back so I sent them feedback when they asked for it via email.  I wrote:


I took a flight yesterday from JFK to Buffal with my wife and son.  We
specifically took JetBlue because of the onflight DirecTV entertainment.  After 5 minutes, the
DirecTV turned off and never came back on.  The system was restarted but it didn't help.

Within a few hours I got a response from Jet Blue that said that each of the passengers on the flight would be getting $15 credits ($45 total) towards our next flights, as it says in their Passenger Bill of Rights.

I looked in their Passenger Bill of Rights and it does in fact say:


IN-FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT
JetBlue offers 36 channels of DIRECTV® service on its flights in 
the Continental U.S. If our LiveTV™ system is inoperable on flights 
in the Continental U.S., customers are entitled to a $15 Credit good 
for future travel on JetBlue.

You can pay using your credits when you book your flight from jetblue.com and you get up to the payment screen, one of the options is to use your Travel Bank credits.

Credits are good for one year
