FordEx Group 300lm Mini Cree Led Flashlight Torch Adjustable Focus Zoom Light Lamp for $4 from Amazon.  Free Shipping.

It says it ships from Hong Kong so it will probably take a while for it to come.

In my experience, this does not come with any batteries , so you might want to pick up Rechargeable Batteries and Charger as well.

Part 5 - Affect on your credit score

Current Active Cards in My Name

My wife (ie - singing up for her) has a bunch more, but that isn't relevant here.  Spouses are completely separate when it comes to credit cards and credit card bonuses.

Before any applications it's important to analyze the cards you have between yourself and your spouse to see if there are any glaring holes.  I haven't shown you all of our cards, but I can think of one.  Neither of us has a Chase Business card.  Chase business cards get you 5% cashback at office supply stores (staples, etc.), cable, phone and internet.  Therefore, this will definitely be one of the cards I apply for.

Once you have plugged every hole, you can start apply for cards based on sign up bonuses.

I use the following guidelines, but they are not set in stone:

  • Every 6 months (see part 1), if they have a good bonus, I tend to apply for one card from each major credit card company: Chase, Amex and Citibank.  One business card and one personal card is ok too.
  • I usually apply for one more card as well, but not necessarily.
New cards I will Apply For

Chase United - Currently 30,000, but I hope to be matched to the old 50,000 bonus offer.  We'll see how that goes

Chase Ink Bold - Currently 50,000, but I hope to be matched to the 60,000 bonus offer.  I chose the Ink Bold over the Ink Plus even though they have the same sign up offer because the Ink Bold is a charge card and Ink Plus is a credit card.  A charge card must be paid in full each month while you can carry a balance on a credit card.  This allows me to tell Chase when I apply to the credit card that I want this card because it allows me to carry a balance so that I can get both sign up bonuses.

Citibank AA Mastercard/Barclays US Airways - American Airlines and US Airways are set to merge this year and their miles will combine.  This is one of the last opportunites to double dip by getting both US airways and American airlines miles.

Barclays NFL - I can't decide between this one and the US Airways.  I am leaning toward the NFL because I like cold, hard cash.  Also, the US Airways card has an annual fee that isn't waived the first year.

PenFed - Penfed cards can be hard to get, but the rewards are good.  5% back on Airline purchases.

My Haul

If all goes right, here is what I can come away with:

  • 115,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points.
    • Can be redeemed for $1,150
    • 80,000 points is free round trip to Israel (I always measure in terms of trips to Israel because that is my ultimate plan on how to use most of these points).
  • 80,000 American Airlines/US Airways points or 40,000 AA and the NFL card
    • 90,000 AA points get you to Israel.
  • $400 from the NFL card
  • $200 from Penfed
Spending Requirements

Assuming I go for the NFL card and not the US Airways card, I will need to spend $15,000 in 3 months.  This would basically be impossible without Vanilla Reload cards and Bluebird, but not terribly difficult with them.  Learn more about Bluebird and Vanilla Reloads here.

Teaneck Research Fail

Whether you are talking about groceries or places to daven, moving means you need to find the best places again and start new routines.

In Buffalo, I spent a lot of time figuring out the best places for deals as well and I think I had a nice thing going.

Now that I live in Teaneck, new research has begun in earnest.  I now have a job so I have less time to do this research, but it will eventually get done.

My first tries at research have not been pretty:

Gas gift cards
  • I have been looking to buy gas gift cards bought at the convenience store connected to a gas station.  Here's why:
    • Most gas stations in NY and NJ have an annoying, but understandable, policy of charging more for credit cards than cash.  Gift cards are usually priced as cash.  An easy work around is to buy the gift card in the convenience store and use it to pay for your gas.  You are effectively paying with credit cards at the cash price.
    • Chase Freedom and Discover are offerring 5% back on gas station purchases from July 1st until the end of September on up to $1,500 of purchases.  I won't spend $500 a month on even one card, but I can stock up on 5% cashback for gas for the rest of the year if I get gift cards.
  • No luck so far
    • I stopped off on Route 4 at the Exxon, Gulf and Lukoil stations and none of them sofl gift cards.
    • I was excited to see that Sunoco was next.  From my experience in Buffalo, I know that at least some of their stores sell gift cards. They indeed sold gift cards but when I tried to pay they told me the dread words "cash only."  Fail!

I will probably end up buying gift cards at a Sunoco station that isn't near me and use them at the Sunoco near me, but stay tuned... More research to continue.

If anyone knows of any gas stations near Teaneck where you can buy gift cards with credit cards, please let me know and everyone wins.

I would like to show a picture of the promotion, but my camera is still packed away in the move.

$200 of Visa/Mastercard Gift Cards at Office Max - $10 Free - Free Points

Update 6/19 - Leaving with a bang.  I went to an Office Max I've never been to before in Buffalo (1701 Niagara Falls Boulevard, Space 700) and asked if they have any $200 visa gift cards.  They pulled out a stack of them.  The lady did't know that it changed to one per customer and I was able to buy $2000 worth on multiple cards for net gain of $30 and 2,000 points!

Update - 6/18 - extended for another week

Update: 6/11 - My local office max started only allowing one per person which makes this far less lucrative.  Your local office max may or may not enforce this.

This week, June 9th-15th22nd, Office Max is offering $10 off the purchase of $200 or more in Visa or Mastercard gift cards.  Visa and Mastercard gift cards normally have a high activation fee that make this cost prohibitive.  However, with $10 off, it will more than cover the fee for the $200 cards.

There is a limit of one $10 bonus per transaction, not per household.  The limit is 35 per store, which comes out to $7,000 of gift cards so you might be able to make a nice amount of money pretty easily.

It is very unlikely that you will find any denominations larger than $200 and you might find $200 cards, but even if you only find $100, the discount will still cover the fee.

This is a chance to get some free spending on your credit card and maybe even to make some money on the actual purchase along the way.

Your Haul

Assuming you buy the $200 card with a $6.95 fee, you will have spent $196.95 on your credit card and you get a return of $3.05.

If pay with the American Express Fidelity card, you will get another $3.93 in cashback (2% cashback on everything) or just about $7 for every $200 card you buy.

Pay with a Chase Ink BoldInk PlusInk Classic or Ink Cash and you will receive 5 Ultimate Rewards points for every dollar you spend at Office Supply stores.  This will be close to 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points for every $200 you spend.  Remember that 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points get you a free trip to Israel on United, one of the transfer partners for premium Ultimate Rewards points!

What to do with your Cards

You can load the funds from your Visa or Mastercard gift cards that have pins onto a Bluebird prepaid card at Walmart and you will not have to actually spend the money on any of those gift cards.  It can be a pain depending on how many you buy, but clearly worth it in my book.

A Word of Caution

There is a limit of 1 per transaction but not one per household.  The limit is 35 per store which is $7,000.  You could theoretically keep buying them.

Don't be an idiot!

Don't put all of your purchases on one card.  It will look very shady to have $7000 of office max purchases on 35 transactions in one day or even one week and you will probably get a couple calls from the fraud department.  Bring all the cards you have and spread out your purchases if you can.

Moving Day!

I'm moving today to Teaneck, NJ today.

Posts will not be as frequent over the next week.

App-O-Rama - Part 1

Part 5 - Affect on your credit score

What is an App-O-Rama?

App-O-Rama is the Personal Finance term used when applying for many credit cards on the same day (App is short for application if you didn't figure that one out).  One can sign up for different credit cards and get lots of bonuses all at once.

I will have a paycheck for the first time in July so July will be the time to try an App-O-Rama.  I have been reading about them for the past couple of years so I have some good ideas on how I want to approach it, but this will be a learning process for me as well.

What's the point?

Organization.  It's easier to keep track of when annual fees kick in if you applied for a bunch of cards at the same time.

Practical.  You are more likely to be accepted for each card if you haven't had a lot of recent inquires for credit on your credit report.  If you applied for 3 cards in the last 3 months and you are applying for a new one this month that's risky behavior in their eyes.  If you are applying for 4 cards on one day, the inquiries from the other banks will all register in their system, but you don't have the recent history against you.

How many cards should I apply for?

That's up to you and there is no correct number.  The more you apply for the more sign up bonuses you get and the more money you need to spend to reach those spending thresholds.

It all depends on the level of risk you are willing to assume.  This may sound simple, but credit card companies are out to make money, not give you free miles.  This is a marathon, not a race.  You have the rest of your life to collect sign up bonuses.  If you are a non-profitable customer to the company, you run the risk of the credit card company closing their relationship with you, sometimes for many years and possibly forever.  You may do better in the short term but is it worth?  Up to you to decide.

Before you decide, take a look at this post on Fat Wallet about companies Blacklisting people for extreme behavior.  Some of the stories are really fantastic.

Some blogs advocate signing up for 3 or 4 credit cards from the same company on the same day so that you will only get one hard inquiry on your credit report.  This may be true for your credit report, but the credit card company still has its own records and knows what you have been doing to them.  Just because you can get away with it now doesn't mean you can get away with it the second, third or fifth time.

How frequently can you do it?

Same answer as before.  Whatever you are comfortable with.  Some blogs will advocate every 3 months.

I personally plan on starting with the every 6 months plan.  Every 3 months for me and every 3 months for my wife.  I don't travel so much so that should more than cover my miles needs and 2-3 cards a year per company doesn't seem too much to me, but who knows where life takes you.  Also, if one of you are applying every 3 months you are unlikely to miss out on any short term promotional sign up bonuses.

As I apply I hope to update how it goes and what I need to do to get all the cards approved.

JetBlue - TrueBlue Points No Longer Expire

JetBlue is my favorite airline to fly domestically.

They tend to be cheaper than the bigger airlines like United and American Airlines and they give you more amenities in coach and better customer service.  Everyone gets a free checked bag, a snack and drink and Direct TV for free (which is priceless when you are flying with a kid).

In addition, if your Direct TV is not working you automatically get a $15 credit towards your next flight, no matter how much the ticket actually costs.  In addition, if there is ever a major delay you can get an even larger credit.

JetBlue also has a great Frequent Flyer program with TrueBlue.  Every seat is available with points and their points are consistently worth more than 1 cent per mile.

The problems with JetBlue have been that they aren't part of any airline alliance.  This means that you can only use the points to fly on JetBlue.  JetBlue also only flies domestically   TrueBlue points also expired with a year of inactivity which meant that you needed to fly every year to keep your points.  Not Anymore!

JetBlue has decided today that your points will never expire!

This is perfect timing for me since I no longer need to fly into New York and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to use my built up miles.

Chase INK Sign Up Bonuses Increase

Chase has increased the signup bonuses for their INK line of credit cards for this week.  These are all business cards and get 5% back at Office Supply stores.  Some have annual fees and some don't, but all of their sign up bonuses have been increased due to celebrate Small Business Week.

The INK Bold and INK Plus sign up bonuses have been increased from 50,000 to 60,000 after spending $5,000 in 3 months.

The INK Cash sign up bonus (no annual fee) has been increased from 20,000 points to 25,000 points.

I wouldn't get too caught up with this increase.  If you signed up recently and got the lower bonus, send Chase a secure message and you should be matched to these increased levels.  Also, if you sign up after this week you can likely still send a secure message to Chase and be matched to these levels for the next 3 months.

Check out this post by Dan's Deals if you want to sign up for the cards and support his blog.

Maximizing Starbucks Purchases

A couple of tricks for Starbucks.

  • Share your Account with Your Spouse or anyone else
    • Starbucks rewards are based on how many purchases you have with your registered Starbucks card.  If you both have smartphones you can use the same account, but you have to sign in to your account every time.
      • After 5 purchases you get free in store refills (studying anyone?)
      • After 25 purchases you have Gold status and you get a free drink for every 12 purchases.

Thank you AH for your help on this one.

PNY 128GB USB Flashdrive - $60

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s):  Top Cashback and Best Buy (only if you don't use Top Cashback - which you should)

Update: Price is back up to $150.  Congrats to those who got it at $60.

My general price target for a USB flash drive is $.50 or less per GB.  For example, you would want to pay $16 or less for 32GB of storage..  Also, as you get more storage, it is more difficult to find that price target.

This USB fits the model.  128Gb for $60 is slightly less than $0.50 cents per GB and 128GB is very larget for a USB flash drive.  Search "5577085" at Best Buyfrom the link to find the model.

Sign up for Best Buy Rewards Zone and you will get a $5 Best Buy Gift Card for every $250 you spend at Best Buy (2%) in addition to all your other savings.  Reward zone gift cards can be redeemed for Amazon gift cards, which I consider the same as cash.

Start your purchase from Top Cashback and get 4% back as well!

Don't have Top Cashback?  Sign up here for free.   They usually have the best cashback percentages although it take a little longer to get your money.

Secure Messaging Your Way to More Miles

I signed up for the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer credit card for my wife a couple months ago.

The current sign up bonus, which is the one I signed up for was 30,000 United Miles if you spend $1,000 in the first 3 months.

In addition, you get another 5,000 miles if you add an authorized user within 3 months for a total of 35,000 miles

I had read online that there was an offer for the same card with a 50,000 mile bonus (55,000 when you add an authorized user), but I hadn't signed up for it.  I also read about possibly getting a $50 credit as well.  Not surprisingly, when I spent $1,000, 30,000 miles were credited to my wife's United account.

I wanted the extra miles so this is what I did and you can do it too whenever there has recently been an available offer that's higher than your bonus.  I have done it with Chase and Citibank.  I don't know if it works with American Express.

Send a Secure Message

  • Log in to your account at Chase.com
  • Click on "Secure Message Center"

  • Then Click on "send a secure message"
  • Choose the credit card and the category of message you want to send and send you message.

It doesn't need to be complicated.  This is what I sent:

After I signed up for a 30,000 mile sign up bonus I noticed that there was a 50,000 mile sign up bonus with a $50 statement credit. Can I please be matched to that offer? Thank you very much.

I got the following response from Chase within 1 business day:

Thank you for contacting Chase regarding your United

MileagePlus® credit card account.

We are pleased to inform you that we have honored your
request and added an additional 20,000 bonus miles and a
$50.00 statement credit to your account to match our
latest offer. These adjustments will be reflected on your
next billing statement.

If you have any further questions, please reply using the
Secure Message Center.

It only takes a minute and your results can be great.  As you see, I didn't even send a link or a screen shot of the available offer.

Related
Save 15% off every Lowe's purchase until the end of June with your Chase Freedom or Discover it Cards - I have needed to spend a lot money at Lowe's and I will probably get over 10,000 points for it just from this quarter.  80,000 miles is a free roundtrip to Israel so that's not too shabby!  I hope to show the full calculations later.

Buffalo, I Will Miss You and Your Easy Free Money Way!

I just got back from my daily "errands".  I cashed out $1,000 of Chase gift cards on my Bluebird with no fees for 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points at Walmart which is 5 minutes away.  80,000 Ultimate Rewards points is equivalent to a free rountrip ticket to Israel on United.

Vanilla Reloads are abundant at the local CVS and $200 Visa gift cards at Office Max, while not quite as abundant as VRs, were certainly more than I needed.  I bought 4 because they have to be on separate transactions and I felt like I would be too much of a pain to them if I bought any more.

If you are curious, there are still 9 $200 visa gift cards at Office Max on Maple Road in Amherst as of this morning.  I will be going back tomorrow to get more (on a different credit card), I hope they restock, but I have a feeling that they won't.

I bought the 4 cards on my Citibank AAdvantage card since I get double miles on up to $750 each month which is why I bought four.  After the second one, I got a text message from Citi's fraud department asking if I had spent the money.  Oops!  No harm done, I replied that I did and the rest went through.  My haul = 1,878 American Airlines miles (1,500 miles for the first $750 and 378 for the next $37.80).  90,000 American Airlines miles will get you a free rountrip ticket to Israel on American Airlines.

Staples - $10 eGift Card with $50 Staples eGift Card

Staples is offering a $10 eGift card when you purchase a $50 staples eGift card.

6/9-/6/13

The gift cards are not offered directly from Staples.  They are offered from a third party website so you will likely not get any extra money from Shop Discover or Top Cashback, but it can't hurt to try.

The purchase probably also won't be counted as an office supply purchase for Chase Ink cards, but who knows.

Nikon D3100 DSLR Refurbished - $305

Update: Price has increased to $349

I don't know much about cameras and I'm not going to get into a Nikon/Cannon debate, but I bought this camera a couple months back and I notice a huge difference between this camera's pictures and a regular point and shoot.

$305 is a great price for this camera.  It is refurbished

As you can see here, the camera costs $350 from the same seller at its own website instead of their ebay store.

Here is a nice review

Google Wallet No Longer Free

Google Wallet became one more way to manufacture free spending on your credit card.  During its promotional period you could send money for free to a friend for free and pay for it with a credit card.

The promotional period is over so it isn't completely free, but that's not the entire story.

Your first $250 is still free!  Anything $250 or above normally costs 2.9% or a minimum of $0.30.

It was nice while it lasted.  It's still free to send money via your bank account.
