Only Received 2/3 Staples Gift Cards from eBay? Wait a Day and then Contact the Seller

There have been quite a few reports on Slickdeals (read the comments) of people buying 3 $75 staples gift cards from eBay (through PayPal) yesterday and today and only receiving 2 out of 3.  This happened to me as well.

I have also previously bought discount eBay gift cards and not received them in my email at all.

First of all, always keep track of your purchases.  Easier said than done.

Second, what should you do now?

The gift cards aren't late until 24 hrs after you bought them so be a little patient.  If 24 hrs pass, you can log into your eBay account and contact the seller.  Let them know what happened and hopefully they will resend the email.  PayPal was really good about resending the email to me previously.

Ebates Down to 1% for Gift Cards from eBay (formally 4%) - Top Cashback is 1.1%

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site:   Ebates and Top Cashback

Ready Ryan points out that Ebates has lowered the payout for gift cards bought from eBay to 1% from 4%.  Unfortunately, he is correct.  That's an unfortunate change, but we will keep chugging on, finding good deals!

Fortunately, Top Cashback is paying 1.1% cashback for anything on eBay so I guess that's the new go to for eBay.

I Was Sloppy but Raise Comes Through Anyway!

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Raise

Here is a nice customer service story from Raise:

This past Friday, I received an email from Raise about their regular weekend sale.  Every weekend, there are certain gift cards which are an extra 5%.  This weekend, Staples was on sale.  I decided to buy gift cards since it would be an extra 5% off.  You can normally buy Staples gift cards for  3-4.5% off.

I bought $168 worth of gift cards for 4.3% off, which comes out to about 9% off after the promo code.

The problem is that I got really excited and I forgot to add in the promo code so now I am stuck with $168 of gift cards.  I would get 5x Ultimate rewards points with a Chase Ink without buying anything upfront!

Where to go from Here?

I checked out Raise's return policy and it says:

The Raise guarantee does not cover:
  • Buyer's remorse/change of mind
  • Misinterpretation of delivery method/time
  • Misinterpretation of redemption method
  • Neglect to apply promo code before purchase

That's not very good.

So, I decided to call anyways.

I was told immediately that it would be no problem and tRaise would add the promo code after the fact and refund my credit card the difference.  I even got an email confirmation from them:

Hello Oren,
We appreciate you taking the time to call in to Raise today. It was my pleasure speaking with you!
Just wanted to confirm, I will be refunding you for the promotion on Monday morning!
If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to reach back out to us.
Have a great long weekend,
*****

Moral of the story:  Most companies have really great customer service.  If you make a genuine mistake or didn't know about a promotion, just ask for it after the fact and most of the time the company says yes.

Turnover Tuesdays - Bed Bath and Beyond

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Top Cashback

For those who are not familiar, I started a series three weeks ago called Turnover Tuesdays. Every Tuesday I would like to highlight one item that I have resold. This will include profitable and non profitable sales. I hope that there is always something to learn.

Week 1 - First attempt at reselling
Week 2 - My second straight fail
Week 3 - My iPad mini collection
Week 5 - An iPad Idea for Your Staples Gift Card Collection

Here is some interesting information regarding buying and reselling at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Chevron/Texaco Gift Card Deals on eBay - Easy and Quick Pajama Money

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site:  eBay and Ebates

HT: Doctor of Credit

eBay is a having a sale on Chevron/Texaco Gift Cards that can be a big money maker for reselling or just a really gift discount, all from the comfort of your Pajamas.

You can buy up to 3 $100 gift cards for $90 each, $270 for $300 is the limit.

- You can break even (even getting a small profit) by reselling the gift cards to either ABC Gift Cards, Saveya (same as giftcards.com) according to Gift Card Granny.  No profit at this point.

- Some people including myself have been targeted for up to 5x purchases from eBay for today and tomorrow on anything over $150.

  • If you have the regular eBay Bucks offer of 2%, you will earn $5.40 if you bought the full $300 of gift cards.  $27 if you have been targeted.

- You can buy eBay Digital Gift Cards from Paypal (limit of $5,000 per 180 days) with a Chase Ink for 5x Ultimate Rewards Points.  Alternatively, you can eBay gift cards in a store that earns extra points.

  • You should be earning at least 2% on this so let's says a minimum of $5.40 profit, but can be a maximum of $13.50

- Ebates is currently offering 4% cashback for gift card purchases on eBay.  You can use my referral link or Doctor of Credit's Link as a thank you.

  • $10.80 profit.

If you already have all the accounts set up, this will take no more than 5 minutes and will earn you over $20 at a minimum and over $50 at the maximum.  Not too shabby!

A Word of Caution

  1. No tracking given to you for the cards to be mailed out, but you should be covered by eBay guarantees.
  2. Gift card reselling prices are always in flux.  When big deals like these come out, you should sell as soon as possible to minimize the chance that the price being offered for your gift card lowers because of resellers.

Getting the Transaction to Work

It might just be me, but I've been having a lot of trouble being able to pay with Paypal recently.  Ever since I got myself a Chase Ink and AMEX Platinum and added those to Paypal it seems like I can't checkout at all.

A few hours on the phone with Paypal didn't seem to help the situation.  Argh!

If this is happening to you, try this:

The only thing that works for me, at least sometimes, is to clear all of my cookies, go back to eBay and then get back to the login screen at Paypal.  It should look like this:

Click on the area that says "Don't have a PayPal account?"

In this way, you can add a credit card (or prepaid card) and pay without actually logging in to PayPal.

The next time I tried to use PayPal this option was gone.  I had to clear cookies again.  So be it.

Gift Card and Merchandise Reselling: A Symbiotic Relationship

We are now more than 2 weeks into the AMEX $20,000 reselling challenge.  The challenge is to spend $20,000 on the American Express Platinum card within 90 days for the greatest amount of profit and the least amount of effort/time.  The full sign up bonus of 150,000 Membership Rewards Points is earned when you spend $20,000 in 90 days.

Some challengers are trying to accomplish the spending exclusively through gift card buying and reselling and others, like myself, are trying to exclusively resell physical merchandise.

Reality Check

No one has to do exclusively do either one.  You are limited only by your credit card limit, float, available time, risk aversion and your ability to find deals.

The fact is that I resell both gift cards and merchandise, whatever is a better value at the time.  Check out Doctor of Credit on current eBay deals.

Some people are better at reselling: Check out Chasing the Points who was able to buy $15,000 of gift cards in less than 30 minutes.  Money Metagame was able to earn a 9% profit on his gift card churning already!  Miles Per Day earned hundreds of thousands of points just in April alone via reselling merchandise and shows how to kill it on your own stacking multiple layers of savings together.

I'm super impressed with what everyone else is able to accomplish in their spaces.

A Symbiotic Relationship

The reality is that resellers of gift cards and merchandise do better when both exist.  How your ask?  Well, I'll be happy to tell you.

Here is an example for illustration purposes:

Recently, eBay started selling Target Gift Cards.  eBay is a great place to buy gift cards because of eBay bucks, discounted eBay gift cards and possible 5x on Chase Ink for some sellers.  In anticipation, there was a big sale on Target gift cards at Cardcash.com.  That was followed by Raise slashing their prices as well.  Money Metagame pointed out that this was a possible opportunity to buy Target gift cards and resell, but he cautioned against this because of the number of people who might be doing the same.  Sure enough, the gift card resellers lowered the price at which they will buy Target gift cards and if you bought and didn't resell right away you were out some money.

This is an obvious point, but I'll say it anyways.  There needs to be demand for the gift cards in order for gift card resellers to make money.

That's where merchandise resellers come in.  Almost all of my profitable reselling is through buying the merchandise with discount gift cards.  Staples is exceptional because of the Chase Ink, but I bought some this morning at 10% off (over 12% off if you include the cashback from buying AMEX gift cards)!  I can sometimes save 10-15% off.  That's a big deal for margins.  I've bought thousands of dollars of Walmart and Bed Bath and Beyond gift cards recently.  I can't find enough of them at the prices I'd like to pay, but every day I find a couple to buy.  Merchandise resellers keep the demand higher for gift cards.  This keeps the prices higher for the gift card resellers.

Merchandise resellers clearly need gift card resellers, otherwise their profit margins would erode.  Chasing the Points just sent $16,000 of gift cards to Gift Card Zen and Cardpool last week.  Thank you for keeping me stocked ;)

I don't mean to say that the majority of the gift card reselling market is due to gift card churners and merchandise resellers.  It's clearly a small percentage.  That being said, we only help each other out.

Do what's comfortable for you and what you're good at. Keep learning and optimizing your methods!

In separate news: I will not be updating anything from tonight until Monday night.  Happy Shavuot everyone!

Missed Out on Chase Bonus? Send a Secure Message

This is not new information, in fact I even talked about it myself back in 2013, but it is always worth a reminder.

If you signed up for a Chase credit card in the last 90 days and the sign up bonus increased, you can send a secure message to Chase and they will match the new bonus.

Recently, the bonus for the Chase Ink Plus increased from 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points to 60,000 points as long as you applied in a Chase branch (online offer had an annual fee the first year).

I signed up for this card for my brother (shhh!) before the new bonus started so I sent a secure message that read the following:

Hello,
I recently signed up for the Chase Ink Plus card with a 50,000 Ultimate Rewards sign up bonus. Very soon after that, a few friends of mine told me that they were offered the same care with 60,000 Ultimate rewards as a sign up bonus when they signed up in a branch I also see that it is 60,000 online now . Can I please be matched the extra 10,000 ultimate rewards? Thank you.

I received a message the following day that said:

Dear *******,
Thank you for your contacting Chase with the recent inquiry regarding the 60,000 point enrollment bonus offer.
I am pleased to inform you that we will be honoring the 60,000 bonus rewards offer as long as you meet the eligibility requirement for your original offer which is to earn 50,000 reward points after spending $5,000.00 within the first 3 months following account opening.
Once you meet the $5,000.00 spend threshold, I request youto please reply to this email via the secure message center or call us at the customer service number listed below we will add the additional 10,000 reward points to your account to match the 60,000 new account offer.
If you have any further questions, please reply using the Secure Message Center.
Thank you,
********Customer Service Specialist

$20,000 Reselling Challenge - Week 2 Update

Recently, I joined Miles Per Day's $20,000 spending challenge.  The idea is to spend $20,000 on the American Express Platinum card within 90 days for the greatest amount of profit and the least amount of effort/time.  The full sign up bonus of 150,000 Membership Rewards Points is earned when you spend $20,000 in 90 days.

A couple of notes to start with:

- I only got my new credit card this past Friday (May 15th).  That being said, Miles Per Day got his card on the 4th so the competition started on the 4th.  I have kept good records of my purchases so I pretended all of my purchases from the 4th were on the AMEX Platinum.  This update is from May 4th until May 18th.
- I am not including any purchases that I only made because of the bonus on a different card (ie Office Supply stores with Chase Ink).

Noah from Money Metagame already gave his 2 week breakdown (he killed it!), so I will follow his outline.

The Numbers Breakdown

  • Spending Complete: $9,100.17

  • Inventory Total: $9,100.17 - I have not actually sold anything yet.  Many items are currently being shipped to me and others are currently checked in at Amazon.  They will be ready for sale soon.  The next update will look very different.

  • Pending Earnings Total - $504.96
    • Cash from Sales - $0
    • Shopping Portal Cash Back (Top Cashback, etc.) - $452.48
    • Store Bucks (eBay Bucks, etc.)  - $52.48

  • Realized Earning Total: $0
    • Cash from Sales: $0

  • Total Times Spent: ~5 hours

The Deals

$20 off $20 at Sam's Club
16% cashback from Ebates on Lenovo
iPad at Sam's Club
8.5% off Target Gift Cards from Cardcash.com

Thoughts and Looking Forward

I wasn't actually looking for the best deals.  I was interested in creating as much spend as possible with very little effort.  I spend almost half the necessary amount in two weeks so I am not worried that I won't hit the $20,000.  I'm not sure what my profit margin will be, but I hope it will be over 5%. I have some deals that are closer to 15% and some where I will basically break even (let's hope for no returns!).

If I am able to sell all the merchandise at cost (after taxes and fees), I will still gain over 5% from portal cashback and other cash equivalents.  Hopefully, I can sell the actual items for a profit as well.

I'm noticing that the turnover time to resell an item is much longer than gift cards.  If you buy an eGift card and sell it as an eGift Card, the entire transaction can be done in less than an hour.  If you sell merchandise, you need to wait for the merchandise to come, then send to Amazon and then Amazon to send to the next person.  That can take a while.

I decided not to wait until the next big American Express Gift Card payout since I was anxious to get started.  I did buy $10,000 of American Express Business Gift Cards today so that will add to my profit margin by about 2% going forward!  I plan to always have plenty of AMEX gift cards available going forward so that I don't miss out on that extra 2%.

5x eBay Bucks for 2 Days -10% in eBay Bucks - Targeted

Check your emails for an offer from eBay for extra eBay bucks. One of my accounts was targeted and one was not.

No eBay bucks given for eBay gift cards, but most other purchases earn them. eBay bucks can be used for later purchases and can be very valuable, especially when buying discounted gift cards.

Time for Me to Close My Santander Extra20 Accounts - No More Pajama Money :(

I recently signed up for a Santander Extra 20 savings and checking account.  The account offers $20 a month for free that can be automated via ACH Bank Transfers as laid out by Doctor of Credit.

I noticed that last month there was a change in what ACH bank transfers looked like and I hypothesized that Santander might stop paying account bonuses for ACH transfers instead of real direct deposits.  Unfortunately, it seems like I am correct, at least on my account.

I didn't change anything for last month.  My transfers from my Schwab account went through normally, my bill pays went through, but I never got my $20 bonus.  Argh!

Here is a picture of my online account from tonight:

Target Gift Cards 8.5% at Cardcash.com for 2 Days

Cardcash.com is offering Target Gift Cards for 8.5% off for the next 2 days.

Sam's Club Mastercard Gift Card Orders Cancelled! This is too far even in My Book

Recently, Sam's Club came out with a very lucrative offer of $20 off $20 when you use your American Express card online.

Sam's Club apparently felt that low cost gift cards were against their best interests so they decided to start charging shipping fees to discourage anyone from buying them (HT Miles to Memories and Travel with Grant)

eBay Payout on Top Cashback Down to 1.1%

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Top Cashback

Top Cashback has lowered the cashback earning rate on eBay to 1.1%.  Previously, it has been 1.5%.

This is a big hit for those who buy a lot of items on eBay.  This is especially true if you buy eBay gift cards because most of the time you can double dip the Top Cashback payout.   Usually, you get paid when you buy an eBay gift card (even though the terms exclude it) and when you use the eBay gift card to buy something else.

For me, this will be bad when I am churning discount gift cards but I also buy a lot of merchandise on eBay to resell. Cuts your profit margin by 0.4%.

Oh well, I'll live.

Lenovo 16% Cashback from Ebates - Today Only

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Ebates

Update: Dead

Ebates is currently having a sweet 16 celebration and Ebates is offering 16% cashback on a couple stores each day, aside from the ones that are 16% until the 18th.

Yesterday Staples was 16% cashback which was an amazing deal.

Today Lenovo and Priceline are 16% cashback.  Priceline has many exclusions including just about everything you are interested in.

Lenovo, on the other hand, only excludes Lenovo outlet items.  16% cashback is a really nice cashback rate for computers or laptops.  This is just in time for the #20kChallenge.  Hint, Hint for all those involved and are reselling.  That's as far as I go.

Enjoy the shopping!

Update: Dead

Ebates is offering 16% cashback on Staples today.  You can combine this with 5x miles from Chase Ink for 21% off today.  Not too shabby!

As always, make sure you use Staples Rewards for up to 5% in rewards for future purchases as well.

Best Way to Buy Mastercard Gift Cards at Sam's club - Hint: Use Gift Cards

Recently, I have been discussing Sam's Club a lot because of their offer with American Express cards for $20 off a $20 purchase.

I became a Sam's Club member with great success so that I could avoid the 10% fee for buying online without a membership.

One of the best ways to maximize this deal is to buy a $50 Mastercard gift card for $12.68 with 2 American Express cards after fees

The $20 credits for buying these have already begun posting to accounts 2 days after buying them

Doctor of Credit has pointed out that they are now out of stock.  Don't worry yet, as long as the offer is added to your American Express card you have until the end of September to spend the money so you can wait to see if it comes back in stock.

American Express Business Platinum - 150,000 Miles Sign up Bonus from Miles Per Day - Hurry!

Big Habitat put out a post on the 8th that he got a American Express Business Platinum card with a very generous 150,000 points sign up bonus from a post from Miles Per Day.

Miles Per Day is a very good blog that I have been reading for about a little while (I must have missed this particular post).  I would recommend the blog even if he didn't have this offer.  This is just icing.

The offers of the sign up bonus are the following:

- Spend $10,000 in the first 3 months, you earn 100,000 points
- Spend another $10,000 in the first 3 months (20k total in 3 months), you earn another 50,000 points

All in all, if you spend $20,000 in three months, you earn 170,000 miles (including the miles for the actual spending).  That's 8.5 points per $1 spent for the first $20,000.

Offer expires on 5/15/2015 so I would hurry.

I called tonight for the offer and I was approved with the offer confirmed by the rep.

The points are very valuable since they can be transferred to American Airlines, Southwest, British Airways and other partners.

The card comes with a $450 annual fee.  $400 of that can be recouped via a $200 calender year airline incidental fee refund.  See the post for more details.

Keep in mind that American Express personal cards are no longer churnable.  You are allowed one sign up bonus per person per lifetime.  Business cards allow for a sign up bonus every 12 months.  This is a business card so you don't have to think too hard about this one.

Spending the Money

$20,000 is a lot of money to spend.   Miles per Day is planning on reselling his way to it (that's what I plan as well), while Noah from Money Metagame had done it through gift card churning.

I'm a New Member of Sam's Club and a very YMMV Story!

This past Sunday I become a new member of Sam's Club and I'm loving it so far.

As readers are well aware of, I became a member due to the $20 off $20 American Express Sam's Club deal.

I bought a Groupon for $45 which is no longer available.  The Groupon came with a $20 Sam's Club gift card as well.

I got 6% cashback from Ebates, which has already tracked at $2.70.  So I really only spent $42.30, but it gets better!

The groupon also came with food vouchers for Rotisserie chicken, 8 cupcakes and salsa.  Valued at $22.98.

I happen to only eat Kosher.  The food vouchers are for items that are not kosher.  I asked the sales associate if I could substitute the food vouchers for food that is kosher and I can eat.

She did me one better, she substituted the food for a Sam's Club gift card for the value of the food and gave me an extra $22 gift card.  Whoa, that's great customer service!

Final Tally

I paid $42.30 and I received:
1 year of Sam's Club membership and $42 of Sam's Club Gift Cards.

Not too shabby!

I think it goes without saying that this may not happen to you at your local store, but if you only eat kosher, are a vegetarian, have celiac, etc.  It can't hurt to ask for a gift card instead

I've already seen the offer on a number (not all) of my american express cards.

Doctor of Credit reports that some have a $10 off $10 deal as well.

Turnover Tuesdays - 2nd Straight Fail on the Sale + a Valuable Amazon Purchurser's Tool

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Amazon

For those who are not familiar, I started a series last week called Turnover Tuesdays.  Every Tuesday I would like to highlight one item that I have resold.  This will include profitable and non profitable sales.  I hope that there is always something to learn.

Week 1 - First attempt at reselling
Week 3 - My iPad mini collection
Week 4 - Bed Bath and Beyond
Week 5 - An iPad Idea for Your Staples Gift Card Collection

My first resale ever resulted in a loss of $10.68 and almost 1,600 southwest miles that have still yet to post.  The most significant point of this sale is actually something I learned to look out for when buying on Amazon.  You can scroll to the bottom for that.

Here comes my second sale:

iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi +Cellular 64GB - $592 at Sam's Club Until 10am Monday

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Sam's Club, Amazon, Top Cashback, Be Frugal and Ebates

Update: Be Frugal portal posted cashback at 4% for electronics!  0% cashback for gift cards, not surprising on that one.  This particular deal is dead.

There are going to be quite a few Sam's Club posts from me in the next couple of days.  This one is out of order, but it is expiring soon so here it is.

Sam's Club is offering the iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi + Cellular 64Gb for $592 until 10am on Monday (tomorrow).

Limit of 2 per member

Staples price is $659
Amazon Price is $705

If you have American Express cards that are eligible for $20 off $20 purchases at Sam's Club, make sure to use those.  2 credit cards can be used per order so you can get $40 off per purchase.

Best Way to Buy

1) Start your purchase from Top Cashback and you will get 1% cashback for electronics, which is almost $6 in this case.  Normal cashback is 4% but electronics say 1%

2) Start your purchase from Be Frugal and you may get 4% cashback.  There is no lower amount from electronics but I have a feeling that you will still only get 1%.  Who knows, maybe you will get the full 4%.  That's $35, not too shabby if it comes through.

If you have a few American Express cards enrolled in the Sam's Club offer, it's probably wise to become a Sam's Club member, which is probably why they have this promotion in the first place.  If your address is in California, a guest membership does not incur the 10% fee.

Best bet is via Groupon.  $45 for membership that comes with a $20 Sam's Club gift card.

Start your shopping at Ebates and you will get 6% cashback on the purchase as well.
