American Express Gift Cards Now 1% on $200 Denominations on Ebates - The Last Shoe has Dropped

I'm not sure why it took Ebates so long to update their terms, but Ebates has now joined the rest of the portals and you can no longer receive cashback for American Express Gift Cards with denominations above $200.

Discounted gift cards make a huge difference in your bottom line when it comes to reselling or just plain old purchases.  It can be the difference between a good deal and a great deal.


If you can add another layer of using American Express Gift Cards to pay, you can add an extra 2% of savings compared to your regular credit card if you buy them when Top Cashback is paying 2.25% (after activation fees).  It will often make a difference in which site actually has the best discount.



It's also nice to know if your gift card will come immediately so you can purchase a discounted gift card right before making a purchase.

Select American Express Gift Cards 2% from Top Cashback - Not Good News!

Top Cashback is offering $2% cashback on select American Express Gift Cards with a limited supply. 

The problem is that the select gift cards have a maximum denomination of $200, as far as I can tell.  This is far worse than the regular business and personal gift cards that have maximum denominations of $3,000 (Top Cashback and other portals usually cap cashback at $2,000 denominations).

If anyone sees an exception, please comment below.

I hope this is not a sign of things to come.

$2,000 Business American Express Gift Cards No Longer Available?

Update: 4/23/2015 - Doctor of Credit suggests that the cards may just be out of stock.  Hopefully, he's right.  

Izz also posted a possible workaround if this is a permanent change.  You can order custom business cards for $2,000.  The transaction was tracked to Top Cashback, but the order was declined so we won't find out if they payout as usual.  If I remember, I will try it next month to see.


Commenter Izz pointed out that when he tried to buy some AMEX Business gift cards today, there was no option to buy $2,000 gift cards.

When I bought earlier this morning that option was there, but I don't see it anymore.

Personal AMEX gift cards still have the $2,000 denominations.

This is kind of annoying because $3,000 gift cards don't get any cashback and there is the same $3.95 fee for $1,000 gift cards as for $2,000 gift cards.

Ever since I have gotten RedBird it has instantly become part of my inner circle of cards.  Don't worry, it's a big circle.  RedBird allows me to create $5,000 of Manufactured Spending fee free every month.  Since my wife has one as well, that's doubled to $10,000 a month.

Loading is quick and easy.  It usually takes me about 20 minutes door to door to get to Target, load and come back home.  The Target employees are always very helpful and never look at the name on the card even when I hand them two.  If I put $10,000 a month on my Fidelity American Express that's $200 a month of free money!

But you know me, I'm always thinking, Can we do better? So, can we do better?  The answer, of course, is yes!

American Express Gift Cards and RedBird - Like Peas and Carrots

I've posted many times about American Express Gift Cards.  One of their best uses is to load money onto RedBird.  Here is how it works:

1) Start at Top Cashback and then go to the American Express Gift Card website.
2) Buy AMEX gift cards with your Fidelity American Express
3) Use your Gift cards at Target to load RedBird.
4) Rinse and Repeat next month


Top Cashback lately has a baseline payout of 1.5% for American Express Gift Cards and sometimes it goes up to 2.25%.

Assuming a 1.5% payout, you will still get your 2% cashback from Fidelity.  The best way to maximize fees is to buy 5 $2,000 gift cards at a time ($3,000 gift cards seem to no longer payout on portals).

Fees come out to $28.70.  You get $200 cashback from Fidelity and $150 from Top Cashback or $350 total.  After fees, it comes out to $321.30 or 3.21%.



That's $160 every month for every RedBird you have.  If you have two cards like me, you will be getting $321.30 every month or $3,855.60 a year!

But wait, there's more!

If you can buy in at 2.25% payout, it's even better for the same amount of work.

Your fees come out to the same $28.70.  You get $200 cashback from Fidelity and $225 from Top Cashback or $425 total.  After fees, it comes out to $396.30 or 3.96%.

That's $198 for every RedBird you have.  If you have two cards like me, you will be getting $396.30 every month or $4.755.60 a year!  Realistically, you aren't likely to get a full year's worth at the 2.25% cashback and even the 1.5% may disappear at some point, but I will enjoy it until it goes away.

Remember, Top Cashback and other portals are no longer paying out on $3,000 gift cards so only get $2,000 gift cards and below.

• Assuming your credit card gets 1% cashback on every purchase, you will get $100 cashback from your credit card and $225 from Top Cashback for a total of $296 after fees or 2.96% cashback while meeting a spending threshold at the same time.

3) Buy Miles Cheaply

• You can take this as an opportunity to buy 10,000 miles on your favorite credit card for a very cheap price. You would want to cash out the gift cards to make it worthwhile. That comes next.

What should you do with these gift cards once you buy them?

3. Cash out via Google Wallet.  This is expensive.  You can use Google Wallet to send money to a friend (read: my wife) who can then withdraw to a bank account. This costs a whopping 2.9% or $290. You will keep about $9,710 of the $10,000.

• With Fidelity American Express you will end up keeping about $106.87 for about half an hour of work.

$3,000 American Express Gift Cards No Longer Eligible for Cashback from Portals

I have't seen any announcements about it yet, but Top Cashback and Ebates (Be Frugal has not yet - Updated now) have updated their terms to exclude gift card denominations above $2,000 from receiving any cashback.

This makes American Express Gift Cards slightly worse.  The $3.95 fee per gift card does not change.  You end up gaining about 0.5% less than previously on every gift card.

For what it is worth, my purchase of $3,000 gift cards on January 27th have cashback pending from Top Cashback.  I don't know when these new updates came out.
