My Top 3 Credit Cards for Reselling

Update:  Citi ATT is a great card to have as well.  It earns 3x Thank You Points at many online merchants.  Doctor of Credit has a great post on what earns 3x and what does not.  This can be great for certain gift cards.  Miles to Memories also has a nice post on the same subject.

Reselling is very capital intensive.  If you are putting a couple hundred thousand or more on your credit card every year, every little percent helps a lot.  1% on 100,000 is an extra $1,000 in  your pocket every year.

That being said, you also want to keep things simple for a variety of reasons.  Between tracking expenses for taxes and returns to stores, fewer cards is much better, as long as it doesn't significantly hurt your overall return.

Here are the credit cards that use on a regular basis or would use if I had them or could maximize their benefits.  I am not an accountant and you should talk to your accountant about the ramifications of using a personal card for business purchases.  I have stopped using these cards for personal use for those reasons but once again, talk to an accountant.

Spending on business cards has the added bonus of not affecting your credit score.

Keep in mind that I love cash.  I love cash much more than I love travel so I am heavily biased towards cashback and my credit card choices reflect that.  I fly economy so points don't do much more than cash.  Just please don't tell anyone that a Blogger is recommending cash.

General Purchases - Non Bonus Spending

Bank of America Travel Rewards with Preferred Rewards

The travel rewards card earns 1.5 points for every purchase that is good towards travel redemptions.  You can redeem for cash but it will only get you .6 cents per point.  The great thing is if you have $100,000 with Bank of America or their affiliates like Merrill Lynch you will earn 2.625% towards travel purchases.  It's also a Visa which is great.

That goes a long way but you have to have a lot of money in reserve for that one.

You can also try to get a 50% bonus on the business version.  That's 2.25 points per dollars.  Not bad.

I would not bother with this card unless you can get the bonus.

Any number of 2% cards:
Whether it be the Fidelity American Express (soon changing to US Bank instead of FIA), the Citi Double Cash or the Capital One Spark ($59 annual fee year 2), there are plenty of 2% cashback cards out there.

Most of my gift cad purchases go on these types of cards.

Chase Ink

Chase Ink is the card to get for anyone reselling.  You can earn 5x Ultimate Rewards points at office supply stores, internet, phone and cable.  You can use it for iPads at Staples and earn oodles and oodles of points.

Points can be redeemed for cash (1 point to 1 cent ratio) or transferred to Airline/Hotel partners if you have the $95 annual fee version.  You can also book travel directly through the Chase Portal with the annual fee version.  Your points are worth 1.25 cents towards travel in that scenario.  Check out this Devil's Advocate post on the topic.

Keep in mind that the merchant category is determined by the merchant.  Try your Chase Ink everywhere once.  You might be surprised to find what codes at 5x for no apparent reason.

Discover

You may no longer be able to sign up for the Discover Double promotion but it is still worth it to have a Discover card for access to the rotating categories and, more importantly, access to Discover Deals.

Discover Deals often has the best shopping portal earnings potential like 5% at Best Buy and often 10% at Macy's and Kohl's.  Just make sure to check out the exclusions before you shop.

I put over $15,000 of spending on my Discover Card last month alone and almost entirely through Discover Deals.

 I know I'm asking for trouble.  Here's hoping I don't get any :)

Honorable Mentions

1) As noted in the update: the Citibank AT&T card is great for reselling.  3x Thank You Points for many online merchants

2) Barclays Arrival Plus - 2.1% cashback on all purchase which can be redeemed for travel.  Has a $89 annual fee so you would need to spend $89,000 to break even with the extra .1% over a 2% card without an annual fee,  I have one for quarter four when I can't keep available on pretty much any of these cards.

3) American Express Simply Cash -business card which earns 5% cashback on Office Supply stores with no annual fee.

Between these 3 types of cards I put well over 90% of my spending for the business. The only time I waiver is when my credit limit does not support using them anymore or if there is an especially lucrative promotion going on.  I sometimes use store specific cards as well like Target and Kohl's but that is rare as well.

What credit cards do you use and love that I didn't mention?  Let me know in the comments.

Oren's Money Saver Beginner's Guide Part 3 - Savings Without Credit Cards

Check out the other posts in the Beginner's Guide Series

Part 1 - Introduction
Part 2 - Maximize Savings Through Credit Cards
Part 4 - Manufactured Spend

In this part, I will discuss maximizing savings online without have to use specific credit cards, for the most part part.

Disclaimer: I receive a referral commission for the following link(s) and I greatly appreciate supporting the site: Top Cashback, Ebates, Big Crumbs, Be Frugal, Raise,

The following ways to save will be discussed:

  1. Discounted Gift Cards
  2. Shopping Portals
  3. Promo Codes
  4. Credit Card Specific Offers

Discounted Gift Cards

Depending on the store, you can often do best through buying discounted gift cards online than by buying items with your credit card.

Let's take Starbucks as an example because it is a consistently popular gift card to sell and buy online.

Here is how to do it:

  • Go to GiftCardGranny.com
    • There are lots of websites that sell discounted gift cards.  Gift Card Granny brings the results of the main sites together on one page.  You don't buy from them, but they will tell you which websites to check.

Today, Gift Card Granny tells me that I can buy a Starbucks eGift Card for 25% off from giftcards.com, a physical gift card for24% off from ABC Gift Cards.  You can also get 21% off from Raise.  We'll talk more about Raise later (Hint: Raise will end up with the largest savings for some).

Total Savings -
You still use your credit card to buy the gift card so your total savings for an eGift Card is 27% (2% extra from Fidelity American Express), 26% for physical from ABC Gift Cards and 22.5% from Raise (don't accept American Express).

*Note*  Please keep in mind that the gift cards are being sold from other people who still retain the account number and pin of the gift card.  They can sell it and then use the card themselves.  I will only buy from websites that give a money back guarantee if that happens within 60 or 90 days.  Only buy when you are ready to use them.

Also, prices are constantly in flux, you may get different results when you check.

Shopping Portals

Some of the biggest and best Shopping Portals are Shop DiscoverTop CashbackEbates, Big Crumbs, Be FrugalChase Ultimate Rewards and many others.  Shop Discover requires a Discover card and Chase Ultimate Rewards portal requires a Chase card that earns Ultimate Rewards.   The others are open to anyone.

Shopping portals are websites that refer you to the actual website you want to shop at.  The Shopping Portal gets money for referring you and they give you most or all of that money for going to them first.  Let's use the same Starbucks gift card as an example.

Start at CashbackMonitor.com to see which shopping portal gives back the most money for shopping at Raise.

p

Cashback Monitor tells me that I can get another 2% cashback from Raise if I start my shopping at Top Cashback.

So, I go over to Top Cashback, type in Raise and click there to confirm that I will be getting 2% cashback and it is false.  Most gift cards at Raise get 2% cashback from Top Cashback, Starbucks is more popular so they only offer 1% cashback, but it is better than nothing.

However, when you check giftcards.com and ABC Gift Cards on Cashback Monitor, neither sites give any extra cashback through a shopping portal.

Total Savings -
Your total savings for an eGift Card is still 27%26% for physical from ABC Gift Cards and 23.5% from Raise.

Promo Codes

Many stores allow you to type in promo codes to get extra savings.  Promo codes are basically coupons for online stores.

Currently, Raise is offering a coupon code RAISE75AF for new customers.  If you spend $75, you will get $5 off.  Now the math changes in favor of Raise if you are a new customer.

The Starbucks card from Raise is for $100 and selling for $79.  After the coupon code, it will cost $74.  Combined with 1% off from Top Cashback and your credit card cashback, you will now get 28.5% cashback, more than the 27% from giftcard.com

Credit Card Specific Offers

Many credit cards have offers to specific stores.  For example, when you log in to your American Express account, there is an area called "offers for you" that has a list of extra cashback at specific merchants.

My Current offers:

  • $5 off a $25 purchase at Carter's
  • 30% off a hotel booking through American Express Travel

You have to add the offer to your card and spend the money on the card with the offer.  You can use any other method to get a discount and as long as you spend $25 at Carter's, you will get $5 off.  American Express also has offers that you can sign up for through Twitters, Facebook and FourSquare.

Here are some examples of useful ones from the past:

American Express has the most number of offers and the best, which is why I collect American Express cards without annual fees.  I can usually get these offers on multiple card.

Bank of America also has BankAmeriDeals.  Some have reported getting $10 or $20 off of $100 and $200 purchases at Staples which can be used to buy Visa or Amazon gift cards at good savings, but I have never seen that in my account :(

Discover also has Discover Deals, but for the most part they are the same deals that are available through the Shop Discover shopping portal.

The Double Dip

Sometimes, some shopping portals will give cashback even when you use gift cards to pay.  This allows you to perform a double dip.  You can buy a gift card directly from the store after using a shopping portal or after buying at a discount from a third party.  Then, you can go back to the shopping portal to buy the merchandise and pay with the gift card.  Many times you will get cashback on the entire purchase, even the part you paid for with a gift card.

Here is an example from Lowe's in the past.

Part 5 - Affect on your credit score

Current Active Cards in My Name

My wife (ie - singing up for her) has a bunch more, but that isn't relevant here.  Spouses are completely separate when it comes to credit cards and credit card bonuses.

Before any applications it's important to analyze the cards you have between yourself and your spouse to see if there are any glaring holes.  I haven't shown you all of our cards, but I can think of one.  Neither of us has a Chase Business card.  Chase business cards get you 5% cashback at office supply stores (staples, etc.), cable, phone and internet.  Therefore, this will definitely be one of the cards I apply for.

Once you have plugged every hole, you can start apply for cards based on sign up bonuses.

I use the following guidelines, but they are not set in stone:

  • Every 6 months (see part 1), if they have a good bonus, I tend to apply for one card from each major credit card company: Chase, Amex and Citibank.  One business card and one personal card is ok too.
  • I usually apply for one more card as well, but not necessarily.
New cards I will Apply For

Chase United - Currently 30,000, but I hope to be matched to the old 50,000 bonus offer.  We'll see how that goes

Chase Ink Bold - Currently 50,000, but I hope to be matched to the 60,000 bonus offer.  I chose the Ink Bold over the Ink Plus even though they have the same sign up offer because the Ink Bold is a charge card and Ink Plus is a credit card.  A charge card must be paid in full each month while you can carry a balance on a credit card.  This allows me to tell Chase when I apply to the credit card that I want this card because it allows me to carry a balance so that I can get both sign up bonuses.

Citibank AA Mastercard/Barclays US Airways - American Airlines and US Airways are set to merge this year and their miles will combine.  This is one of the last opportunites to double dip by getting both US airways and American airlines miles.

Barclays NFL - I can't decide between this one and the US Airways.  I am leaning toward the NFL because I like cold, hard cash.  Also, the US Airways card has an annual fee that isn't waived the first year.

PenFed - Penfed cards can be hard to get, but the rewards are good.  5% back on Airline purchases.

My Haul

If all goes right, here is what I can come away with:

  • 115,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards Points.
    • Can be redeemed for $1,150
    • 80,000 points is free round trip to Israel (I always measure in terms of trips to Israel because that is my ultimate plan on how to use most of these points).
  • 80,000 American Airlines/US Airways points or 40,000 AA and the NFL card
    • 90,000 AA points get you to Israel.
  • $400 from the NFL card
  • $200 from Penfed
Spending Requirements

Assuming I go for the NFL card and not the US Airways card, I will need to spend $15,000 in 3 months.  This would basically be impossible without Vanilla Reload cards and Bluebird, but not terribly difficult with them.  Learn more about Bluebird and Vanilla Reloads here.

2012 Credit Card Cashback Year In Review

Here is the 2nd annual breakdown of how I did on my various credit cards from 2013.  Here is my yearend review from 2011.  Hopefully, we can all take some lessons about to do even better in the future!

Some words of introduction

  1. Credit card sign up offers netted me over $2,000 this year have skewed some of the numbers.  I will present my results both with and without any sign up bonuses since these are one time bonuses.
    1. I valued miles at 1 cent per point, for ease of calculation, but in truth I will probably end up redeeming them at higher values.
    2. I wouldn't suggest that most people sign up for as many cards, but you certainly can get back significant money if you are willing to do a little bit of work and follow my blog, of course :)
  2. I have included any American Express bonuses that I would have otherwise spent money on, therefore my American Express numbers are better than the rest of my cards.
    1. For example, I included when American Express gave me $20 for spending $200 at Best Buy, which I did about 10 times.  I counted it as $205 of spending and $20 of rewards.  This is because I bought VISA gift cards for $205 and got $20 back for a cashback % of close to 10%.  I also counted Small Business Saturday as rewards without spending because I would have bought the same stuff anyway.
      1. The AMEX cards I get lower percentage on is because I use them more frequently and not just for the promotions.

My goal is to get at least 2% back on every purchase.  I use the Fidelity American Express card which gives 2% on every purchase, so if the purchase doesn't fall into a special category, at least I can use the Fidelity card and get the standard 2% back.

Here is the breakdown from my different Cards in alphabetical order - Most have some sort of Sign Up Bonus when you click on the links

American Express Blue Everyday - 15.26%
American Express Blue Preferred - 9.26%
American Express Blue Sky - 27.35%
American Express Fidelity - 4.32%
American Express Starwoods - 28.91% (Sign up Bonus)
American Express Starwoods Business - 67.91% (Sign up Bonus)
Chase British Airways - 452% (Sign up Bonus)
Bank of America Cash Rewards - 3.38%
Bank of American Cash Rewards #2 - 89.1% - (Sign up Bonus)
Chase Freedom - 4.1%
Chase United Credit Card - 0.91% (Annual Fee)
Citi AAdvantage - 65.25% (Sign Up Bonus)
Citi Dividend - 31.23% (Sign up Bonus)
Discover it™- 3.9%
NFL (barclays) - 31.92% (Sign up Bonus)
Target - 5%

Overall -

  • 17.38% with sign up bonuses and 7.19% without sign up bonuses.
    • If you take out all of my American Express cards, the percentage drops down to 3.46%
Keys to my success
  • Gift Cards - Many promotions require you to spend a lot of money right away, especially sign up offers.  I take big advantage of buying gift cards to gas stations, Amazon (which I consider like cash), and Visa (comes with a fee so are last resort) and using them over time.
    • Serve® from American Express - makes life a lot easier.  I hate having lots of small Visa gift cards around.  You can combine all of them onto your Serve card and just carry around the one card.
  • American Express Promotions - American Express has cards with great cashback, the real reason you get American Express cards is for all the promotions they run throughout the year.  I will continue to keep you informed.
  • Staying on top of my credit report - I use Credit Sesame to monitor my credit report so that if anything negative pops up, and it has before, I can take care of it right away.
    • In case you are wondering, my credit score, according to both Credit Sesame and Credit Karma is over 770, so opening credit cards has not hurt me at all.

My analysis:

This past year

American Express Cards -  I have already explained that I used bonuses to achieve very good results.  I added the Blue Preferred late this year so hopefully that will help for next year as well.  sed to be my 2% card because it was a Visa but that program was discontinued and changed to the Bank of America Cash Rewards Card.
Chase Freedom is my main backup when when AMEX wasn't accepted, or when a purchase is under $10 and also has 5% rotating categories.
Discover - same as Chase Freedom, except all the rewards can be multiplied by 1.25 if you take rewards in gift cards instead of cash.
Target - Target gives 5% off every purchase.  We buy diapers there and have started to spend more money there when we stopped being members of BJ's.

What to Change for Next Year

  • In about a year or so, I may need my credit to be as good as possible so I will only sign up for a credit card if the sign up bonus is too good to pass up (over $300 with no annual fee), otherwise, I am going to stick with what I have.
    • This means, of course, that I don't expect my numbers to be nearly as high next year.
  • I am going to try to use Bluebird prepaid cards to pay more of my bills that don't accept credit cards.  I will "only" get 1.2% back if I use my Fidelity, but 1.2% is still better than 0%.
    • My overall percentage will go down, but the name of the game is more money, not higher percentage.

I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing this.

Avoiding International Credit Card Fees

Disclaimer - The Discover offers are no longer valid.

Before you travel outside of the US, you should know which credit card is the one you should use.  If you don't plan ahead of time, you could end up paying some significant fees for international use.

You can always find out this information by checking the "terms and conditions" found on the website where you apply for the card.  Just search (control [command for macs] + f) for "foreign" and it will tell you how much they charge

The Winner:  Fidelity American Express Credit Card.  They charge you 1% but you get 2% back on every purchase so it is the equivalent of getting 1% back.

2nd bestDiscover it™- no foreign transaction fee.

3rd Best - Chase Sapphire Preferred - no transaction fee but there is an annual fee.

Watch out for the Chase Freedom and Bank of America Cash rewards, you will pay a whopping 3% foreign transaction fee.  American Express Blue and Blue Preferred aren't much better at 2.7%

I am only discussing cards that I recommend in general, here is a more comprehensive list of some other cards
