Turnover Tuesdays - Target Cartwheel and other Coupons Can Make a Major Impact

For those who are not familiar, I started a series a while back called Turnover Tuesdays. Every Tuesday I like to highlight one item that I have resold. This will include profitable and non profitable sales. I hope that there is always something to learn.

The Item - Disney Princess Royal Doll Collection 7-Pack

On a tfrom a friend, I was told to check out the Disney Princess Royal Doll Collection 7 Pack at Target.  This normally costs $50 at Target and if you went to the store, you would see on the shelf that it costs $50.  It was selling on Amazon at the time (mid to late November) for about $60.  So why would I be interested?  Fees would eat up all the profit.

There were 2 Target coupons that made this very, very worthwhile.  Target was offering 20% off any toys with Coupon code TOYS online or texting TOYS to a specific phone number to receive an in store coupon.

In addition, the Target Cartwheel app was offering 30% off the Disney Princess Royal Doll Collection 7 Pack.  Target Carwheel is a separate app that Target has with rotating coupons.  Sometimes there is nothing good and sometimes they will take off 15% off any iPad.

Now, what was nice was that these coupons stacked, making this an effective 50% off the price.  The dolls went down from $50 to $25 each.

Credit Card Points

I used my Target Red Card for an additional 5% cashback on the purchase.  No points but the price is now $25.41 for me after taxes and Red Card savings

Shopping Portal

Cartwheel is in store only so no shopping portal points.

Loyalty Points

Target does not have Loyalty points

Fulfillment by Amazon Fees

Fees on Amazon were about $18 for me.  Fees can be very significant for toys.  Shipping was about $2-$3 per unit.  They were a pain since they were very long and don't fit in a standard box size.  Let's call the fees $20.

The Haul

I bought ten of them (that's how many my local Targets had).  I sold each of them for about $64 on the same day though I waited quite some time hoping the price would increase but sadly it did not.  They sold super fast since it was during the holiday season once I lowered my price.

So that's a take home of $44 for each unit after fees compared to paying about $25 so a ~$20 gain per unit

Here is how the numbers work
Cash = ~$20
Credit Card Points = $0
Portal Points = $0
Loyalty points = $0

This was a pure cash play.

Return on investment is about 70-80% on the sale.  I will take that all day!

Without the coupon code and the Target Cartwheel app I actually would have lost $5 per unit.  Instead, it was a gain of $20 per unit.  That's a big deal.

Takehome: It's great to check circulars but it is important to check the latest cartwheel deals as well!
